Introductory Flight Screening (IFS) Exemption Program
The IFS Exemption Program is conducted at Doss Aviation's Part 141Flight Training Center in Raton, New Mexico; the IFS Exemption Program is a 4-week course to achieve two outcomes:
Satisfy the Navy IFS exemption standards with a 19-hour flight training program culminating in a solo cross-country flight.
Prepare students for the rigors and approach of US Naval flight training.
Students learn the following:
Academics and flying techniques to safely conduct a solo cross-county flight to meet the IFS Exemption standard.
How to fly an aircraft similar to a T-6: low-wing, throttle in left-hand / stick control in right-hand.
Familiarization to the military-style training approach (Stand-up, bold face memorization, VFR arrival/departure procedures, step-desk briefing).
End of course report card: Understand your weaknesses and strengths as you enter API/Primary Flight Training in the T-6.

Who should attend?
Doss Aviation’s IFS Exemption program is an immersion into our military style flight training program specifically designed to prepare aspiring Naval Aviators. Those best suited for this program include:
Newly commissioned Naval Officers needing to meet IFS flight requirements who want the best preparation for the rigors of API/Primary Flight Training (Post Aviation Career selection).
NROTC Midshipmen that desire to be aviation candidates (Pre Aviation Career selection).
How long does the flight training last?
The Initial Flight Screening Exemption program is approximately 4 weeks in duration. Flight training is conducted Monday through Friday and occasionally Saturdays, depending upon weather.
Where is the flight training conducted?
At the Doss Aviation’s FAA approved Part 141 Flight Training Center in Raton, New Mexico. The prevailing weather in Raton New Mexico is highly conducive to flight training, additionally there is little aviation traffic congestion in the local area.
Do I need to have aviation experience to enroll in the program?
No, our flight training program is easily tailored to both beginners as well as more advanced aviation students.
What aircraft is used for theIFS Exemption program?
Doss Aviation uses the Diamond DA-20-C1 aircraft. The DA-20 aircraft is a proven platform for introductory flight training. “The DA20 has been called both the “world’s best” (Plane and Pilot Magazine) and “world’s safest” trainer (AviationConsumer.com). “ Doss Aviation, with more than 280,000 flight hours over an 11-year period training in this aircraft, has an accident rate at one third that in general aviation.
The aircraft is configured with a reverse stick and throttle cockpit such that student has the throttle in the left hand and the control stick in the right hand similar to the T-6 Aircraft.
What other flight training resources are available to me?
Our training center provides a fully integrated learning environment and includes a variety of learning aids to enhance aviation learning retention.
How many flights do students get?
Students will receive a combination of simulator and DA-20 aircraft flights in the program. The program includes about 18 DA-20 flights accumulating approximately 22.5 hours of flight time.
Is the IFS Exemption flight training the same as the Air Force IFT?
No, the IFS Exemption program is not the same as IFT. However the IFS Exemption program is designed to fully prepare students for success in Primary Flight Training in the T-6. The program does use the same flight instructors and the same flight training aircraft as used in AF IFT.
Recently the Navy sent a small group (35) of Student Naval Aviators (SNAs) though our AF Initial Flight Training program. After successfully completing our training program, each of them successfully completed Navy Primary Flight Training in the T-6 aircraft and have received their wings.
What are the prerequisites to enroll in the flight training?
Be a US citizen
Be currently enrolled in an Navy, Air Force or Army ROTC program
Have a completed FAA Class III physical
What do I need to do complete the flight training program?
The program is designed to allow students to skip Navy IFS flight training conducted at civilian flight schools in the Pensacola, FL; Annapolis, MD; and Quantico, VA areas. To be exempt from the Navy IFS program students must complete the ground training and the solo cross country portion of the IFS exemption program.
How does this flight training help me succeed in the Navy flight training pipeline?
Military flight training is distinctly different from civilian flight training. This program provides an exposure to military style flight training, including professionalism and discipline, which are integral parts of becoming a military aviator, and specifically prepares students for success at Primary. Students will have the same former military instructor pilots as AF IFT, and will use the same DA-20 aircraft as AF IFT. Additionally, our program is also designed to best prepare aviation officers for success in Primary and follow on stages of Naval Aviation training in the T-6 Aircraft.
What happens if I struggle or don't like flight training?
The training also provides an early opportunity to identify weaknesses for improvement before your formal flight training process starts. We also recognize that on occasion anyone can have a bad day! We provide additional flights in the training syllabus as appropriate on a case by case basis.
Why should I do IFS Exemption and not just wait until I'm commissioned in the Navy or Marine Corps?
Everyone experiences an initial adjustment to aviation; this introductory training exposure provides an early low cost opportunity to make an advised self-assessment as to whether you’re adaptable to an aviation career.
Can I get additional flight hours and complete my Private Pilot’s License
Yes, our flight training center in Raton NM is an FAA approved part 141 flight school and operates under both Part 141 and Part 61 FAA regulations. Additional flight hours for completion of a private pilot’s license can be coordinated as part of an enrollment.
